An Island in the Sun

Santa Catalina Island, CA

I'm back from the island and I must say, the dock where the Catalina Express loads and unloads is one of the happiest and saddest places on the island; happiest when you arrive, and sad when it is time to depart. Once again I have made tons of great memories and took a few pictures along the way to share with you!

My boat was scheduled to make the 26 mile trip at 8:30 am, I happened to show up early and they put me on the 7:30 boat instead, which I was happy about. The ride was a bit chilly, but I always like riding on the outside so I can enjoy the ocean air, they also have indoor seating and a cash only bar with snacks, etc. When we first pulled into the harbor, I was a bit worried about the weather, but then I remembered mornings sometimes start out with this and clear up in no time.

As you can see things quickly clear up. The bird in this picture thought he was king of the pier, challenging all of the other sea gulls, and bravely attempting to steal my fish and chips right off of my plate.

First up was some good ol' fishing with a drop line right off the edge of the pier. Drop lines are available for $5 and you can buy either squid or anchovies for bait for $2. I recommend the squid as the anchovies fall off the hook easier and only seemed to attract one type of fish. You're guaranteed to catch something using either, but the keeper size is 14"+

One of the evening I ate at Steve's Steakhouse, a really nice restaurant. Head up the stairs while waiting for your table for a great view of the harbor.

There is a road out to Lover's cove. If you continue to follow it (there are signs leading the way) you'll find some breath taking views, a little bit of history, and even a pet cemetery. You can rent a golf cart, schedule a tour shuttle, or bike it. I chose to take the scenic route  via moped because of style points!

Towards the end of the scenic road, we ran into a group of deer, a male, a female, and a young deer.

The doe asked if she could take a selfie.

The next adventure was to explore the ocean. The picture above is of a sting ray, it swam off as soon as he knew I was out to take a picture, so I apologize in advance, you'll have to zoom in to see it. I scheduled a boat dive and we headed to Hen rock, and the second dive was Twin Rock. I was able to reach a depth of 50' in these areas. I was lucky enough to spot a sea lion, a horned shark, and the infamous giant black sea bass. Let me tell you, the size of those fish will really humble you when you are out of your element.

Lobsters...everywhere...need butter... Unfortunately out of season, but still pretty awesome to see.

Saw a few of these sheep crab also.

On the last day decided to go parasailing, amazing views and a peaceful setting, Great way to get a different vantage point.

My view from the skies.

This is a panorama from inside the casino while the lights were changing colors.

My last shot of the island before making that long trip back to reality. All in all a great time, I can't wait to go back. Got any cool stories from the beautiful island of Catalina? Please, share them below!

Santa Catalina Island

"I found my love in Avalon
Beside the bay
I left my love in Avalon
And sail'd away
I dream of her and Avalon
From dusk 'til dawn
And so I think I'll travel on
To Avalon"

In 24 hours I'll be heading to one of my favorite places, the town of Avalon, located on Santa Catalina Island, 26 miles west of the southern California shore.

This place is amazing, I've been making the quick boat trip over for several years, and have many fond memories that will never leave me.

This island is unique in many ways, and has a wide array of flora and fauna you may not expect to see.

Buffalo and/or bison were brought to the island for a movie shoot in the 30's and a few escaped, bred, and now populate the interior of the island.

This is a subspecies of the island grey fox that is only found on Catalina Island.

And of course, the infamous Garibaldi, the California State (marine) fish. This fish is protected, I've caught them on accident before and a release is mandatory to avoiding a fine.

Flying fish are also a unique animal that you can see around the island. Nighttime boat tours are available to witness them take flight.

Catalina is also where the rare 18 foot long oar fish washed up, I really wish I could have been there for that!

There are many activities to participate in while on the island, however simply relaxing on the beach is never frowned upon!

Here at lover's cove, you can take a tour in a submarine, or a glass bottom boat and view some of the fish while keeping dry. I personally will be braving the 68 degree water to get up close and personal with some of the full time residents.

I highly recommend that you visit this special place. I have met people from southern California who have never been to Catalina, and I personally think they are crazy. Stay tuned, i'll be posting pictures from my umpteenth trip 26 miles across the sea, and I still could not be more excited!

Kauai, HI

Well, unfortunately, my yearly excursion back to the beautiful island of Kauai, HI has ended, but I will be back! Here are a few pictures from the trip, I hope you enjoy! If you have any questions a bout the trip, names of places, tours, etc, please leave a comment.

View of Honolulu from the plane. You must stop on Oahu to board another plane to Kauai. I always get so excited descending through the clouds to get the first glimpse of paradise..

Snorkeling right off of the shore, so much life!

Sunsets here never get old.

Baby gecko! These guys are everywhere, even in the house, great pest control.

My first dive of the trip, holding a brittle starfish.

Second dive of the trip, this was at Sheraton caverns. If you've never dove Kauai, I highly recommend going here, tons of fish, turtles, octopus, and was lucky enough to see a reef shark hanging out. Check out Seasport Divers and ask for Derek, tell him Sean and Jen the Aquarist sent you!

Opened a coconut with my bare hands...it's harder than you'd think, but well worth it for the drink.

Hiked 8 miles round trip on the Hanakapi'ai trail. 2 miles to a secluded beach, an additional to a 300 foot waterfall, and 4 long miles back. Very strenuous with a beautiful pay off.

Small waterfall along the Hanakapi'ai trail,

300 foot waterfall where you can swim below. Heads up, the water is freezing, however, I have a personal rule: if I hike to a waterfall and am able, I must go in, and shower in the fall.

A view from the sunset cruise. I've been on the Holo Holo charter and the Blue Dolphin charter, both are great!

Lots of relaxing on the beach!

Hard to see but it's a double rainbow, oh man, what does it mean!?!

Stand up paddleboard, highly recommended! I usually rent all my equipment from Kauai Beach Boys as they have everything you'll need, and fairly priced.

Aloha for now!

A Desert Oasis: Havasu Falls

Who would have guessed something so beautiful could exist in the middle of the desert? Feast your eyes on the natural wonder that is Havasu Falls, a.k.a Havasu Creek,
located near Supai, AZ.

"Havasu Creek is a stream in the U.S. state of Arizona associated with the Havasupai people. It is a tributary to the Colorado River, which it enters in the Grand CanyonHavasu Creek starts out above the canyon wall as a small trickle of snow run-off and rain water. This water meanders on the plains above the canyon for about 50 miles (80 km) until it enters Cataract (Havasu) Canyon. It then reaches Havasu Springs, where an underground river feeds the creek."

Havasupai is the ideal hiking destination for all hikers from beginners to seasoned veterans. The 10 mile hike is not as bad as it sounds, as only the first mile and a half consists of steep switchbacks. The remainder of the trail is mainly a winding wash that gradually turns into a canyon with gentle incline.

Swimming, wading, and playing in the gorgeous pools below the falls - or in the stream flowing through the campground - are well worth the hike!

The creek is ever-changing,  because any items that fall into the stream mineralize very quickly, causing new formations and changing the flow of the water. This causes the creek to never look the same from one year to another.

For more info about this one of a kind destination, visit: http://havasuwaterfalls.net/index.html

If you've ever visited the falls, please, leave a comment below and tell us about your journey.
